I can’t seem to keep up with life right now and writing has been pushed to last priority. I’ve been swimming and biking this week and have found that keeping my back in working order for sitting through long operas does depend on my workouts or lack thereof. I’ve determined that I can’t bike before a Wagner day, not only because of back position but because my shoulders/arms/wrists get too tired. I”ll be sticking with running or light swimming and tons of core work before these shows. I’ve also realized that if I lay down and stretch or roll out on the foam roller every intermission, my body is much happier when I go back into the pit! So, here’s the week in re-cap!
PT appointment where my therapist did more body work and told me I had ” buns of steel”. Unfortunately that wasn’t meant as a compliment- it was a result of too much sitting and muscles seizing up, which was resulting in knee pain and back soreness. Somehow it never ceases to amaze me how everything is connected! She dug in deep and then hooked me up to electric stimulation machine and ice (at my request!). I walked out of there feeling great and hurried to the pool to try and fit in a short swim before work. My main goal was to stretch everything out and that’s just what I did with my 10 minutes in the pool. My arms were too sore from Wednesday’s hours of rehearsals to do more! I got dressed after my swim and was horrified to find that I’d packed the wrong jeans early that morning when I was throwing things into my swim bag. (gasp!) and I had my skinny jeans, a tight t-shirt and my running shoes. Not a good combo so I decided to be creative and go for an unfortunate rolled up jeans, 80s look. I wish I had a picture. I did get curious looks on the street and some funny comments from friends. Thursday night I had a massive headache and all of the muscles in my back and butt were sore. My fiance fed me 2 aleve, which is something I usually refuse, but I slept well and woke up feeling great!
This morning I spent a few hours at Velo Rogue Cafe with my noise canceling headphones listening to edits of my trio CD. I was dismayed to find that the headphones canceled everything except the music playing in the coffee shop! My fiance was next to me doing something on the computer and we ate a tasty breakfast while we waiting for pool lap lanes to open up. The pool was crowded and I jumped into the fast lane, so all thoughts of a gentle swim went away quickly. I pushed myself a little further than I’ve been swimming and felt fine.
the workout: 1200 yds, alternating 100 yds freestyle, 100 yds mixed back and breath stroke, keeping pace without rests
I rode with Team Diva and decided at my usual turn-around that I was ready to go a few more miles. I didn’t do the entire loop with them but was of course waiting at Cibo when they returned. I hadn’t realized what a mental block I’d had on riding past the end of the bike path until I did it. I haven’t ridden more than 20-25 miles in so long but yesterday I rode 30 miles! We stretched after and I spent time on my back all afternoon at various intervals, then actually sat through last night’s opera with very little discomfort! The ride itself was gorgeous and after a foggy bridge crossing, I was actually riding in a tank top. I remembered to sunscreen my top half but my legs are red and have a crazy biking shorts line now.
the workout: 30 miles, always spinning in easy gear, not using muscle but speed to keep moving
