Every step of my run felt difficult today and I walked way more than usual, especially near the end. I could blame it on the crummy sleep I’ve been getting lately, or the windy ride in Napa yesterday (only 20 miles, but super-windy!) or the heat. I’m not really sure why it felt so horrible, but I did get through it and as I rest before the show tonight, I don’t feel half bad. I had a massage and he worked over my spine, then I waded into the ocean waist deep and took an “ice bath”. My body feels pretty good at the moment.
I began my run at 10, which would be fine on any usual day, but today it was already in the 80s and I’m not really used to the heat. I had chosen a course I knew was 15 miles so I wouldn’t have to think about it more, but I hadn’t considered that there would be very little shade along the way. I ran through the park, down the beach and toward Lake Merced. At some point, my energy gel fell from it’s stash in my water bottle pouch and I unfortunately didn’t notice it. Luckily I had packed a mini luna bar also. As I neared Lake Merced, I saw a biker stop to ask man for directions and witnessed the man grab the bike, then the guy’s hand and try to bite him! The biker escaped and I moved as quickly as possible to get away from the crazy guy. That was the only time I was inspired to move faster all morning. The path around the lake was sunny and completely void of breeze. There were several of us out there, looking miserable, hoping to pass a shady tree. At one point I stopped to refill my water bottle and wet my cap. The older man beside me did the same as he informed me he’d come up here to beat the heat of the south bay, but it wasn’t much better. On my run back by the beach, the only thing I wanted to do was jump in and join the surfers for an icy refreshing treat. However, home, food and massage were calling so I trudged on. My first thought upon entering my cool apartment was to lay down in the entryway and take a nap. Of course I didn’t and I quickly felt less horrible as I forced myself to eat some lunch.
