NYC triathlon

Now that I am no longer a student and have “free time” (between parenting and working), I decided it was time to sign up for my next triathlon! I haven’t raced since January 2018, and though I don’t lack the motivation to exercise, I do love having a goal.

The New York City triathlon is just over six months away. After researching the course and finding that the Hudson River swim is both with the current and comes out just below my apartment building, I pondered the race for a few days then signed up one evening when Ariel was out and I was tired of practicing violin.

When I’m healthy and feeling good, I have a tendency to be overzealous in my training (and everything else), so my main goal for this triathlon is to get through the next six months injury free.

today’s river run

I haven’t developed a training plan for myself yet, but am currently running <2 miles three times a week and swimming a quarter-mile a couple times a week. One of the runs each week is a mile with Aviv. When I told him he’s my official training buddy and is motivating me to run, I was rewarded with a huge grin. I am being extra cautious with my knee as I start up running again, so my biking is limited to trying to keep up with Eitan as he races toward Little League practice. As spring continues to bloom, I’ll add in regular loops around central park and rides near the river. Truthfully, I miss my Headlands loops and other Bay Area routes. Cycling here sadly does not compare to what I left. On the flipside, I’m not freezing all the time and I never have to ride through fog.

Aside from the three main sports, my daily yoga practice helps me stay centered and is important for both a strong core and balance. Though I don’t remember 100% of the time, I’m trying to be strict about continuing PT exercises for both shoulder and foot, in addition to doing a short full body roll-out every night on the foam roller. I know that sleeping and eating habits are important in this process, and this is where I am the most challenged. I’ll keep working on that – or at least thinking about working on it!

finished today’s run with some steps

If anybody wants to join me, the race is Olympic distance and it takes place on October 1. Of course, if you happen to be in the neighborhood on race day, I love spectators almost as much as I enjoy having a race buddy!
